Patriotic Pencil Holder
When July is near you start to think about the 4th of July. The 4th of July is a national Holiday in the United States that is celebrated with patriotism. Families often celebrate by hosting or attending a picnic or barbecue. Decorations are generally red, white, and blue—the colors of the American Flag. It is a time when people show their pride for the U.S., and celebrate the freedoms they have.
A craft that can be made before the holiday, or even on the 4th of July is a “Patriotic Pencil Holder.” This is a craft that can be made outside at a picnic table while at a 4th of July celebration or inside during poor weather. While making this craft, a discussion could take place amongst family about the history of the day, the symbolism of the American Flag, or why they are proud to be an American.

Step 1: Place your old newspaper pages down on your work surface. Paint, or color your craft sticks with markers in red, white, and blue. Color some of the sticks red, some of the sticks white, and some of them blue. It doesn’t matter how many times you use each color on your sticks. Just be sure to use all three colors. If you painted them, place them down on the newspaper till they dry completely.

| |
Step 2: Place your piece of cardboard flat onto your workspace. Hold your empty toilet paper roll upright on your cardboard. Using a pencil, trace the round end of your toilet paper role onto the cardboard.
|
| |
Step 3: Take your piece of cardboard with the circle you just drew in pencil, and cut out your circle.
|
| |
Step 4: Glue your circle flat onto the end of your toilet paper roll, so that it can use this to stand itself up. Wait a few minutes until it is completely dry.

|
| |
Step 5: Once it is dry, coat the outside of the toilet paper roll with a little bit of glue all around it. Place your colored popsicle sticks flat side-by-side all around the tube, in order to cover it.

|
| |
Step 6: Wrap your tube with rubber bands, until the glue is dry.

|
| |
Step 7: White you are waiting for your tube to dry, take your construction paper, and draw and cut out stars small enough that they can fit on your toilet paper roll. |
| |
Step 8: Once your tube is dry, remove the rubber bands, and glue your stars onto the popsicle sticks. |
|
When it is completely dry, you will have your very own patriotic pencil holder! Happy July 4th everyone!
